Is recycling a feasible fix?

"Recycling is an aspirin, alleviating a rather large collective hangover... over-consumption"
- Robert Lilienfeld and William Rathje

In today's world, humans can be so inclined to believe that reducing pollution can be done so by recycling. Waste management theory incorporates recycling, but perhaps it is not ideal in preventing pollution. But when did recycling become so hip and mainstream? Strictly speaking in terms of the western world, we have recycling depots and we typically see recycling bins in communities, in shopping centers, institutions and local community events. We do a good job with providing these services; however, from interaction with friends and family - they think they do a pretty good job at recycling in their own households, but upon inspection as to what comprises their recycling bins, this does not seem to be the case.

There's obviously a disconnection here!

FYI:
The City of Calgary municipality has a Blue cart recycling program. The following items can be discarded into the Blue cart:
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic jugs and bottles
  • Bags, packaging and food containers
  • Food cans and foil
  • Glass jars and bottles
Is recycling an ideal waste management option?
